Which substances are the so-called “allergens” that are excluded through leather processing with askin?

The anti-allergic leather used in askinshoes footwear is produced in our production facilities adjoining our headquarters. Production takes place according to askin manufacturing specifications and guarantee the total elimination of all synthetic chemical substances known to be allergens.
Some of the most well-known allergens are classed according to the following categories:
- Metal tanning agents: chromium salts, aluminium, zirconium, titanium, nickel, lead, copper, cadmium;
- Acids: sulphuric, formic, oxalic, hydrochloric;
- Bioxides: trichlorfenol, pentachlorfenol, tributyl tin oxide;
- Formaldehyde resins;
- Epoxy resins;
- Amine catalyzers;
- Azoic catalyzers;
- Bactericides;
- Isocyanides;
- Carbamates;
The substances listed above represent only a part of the complete list of the synthetic products that are eliminated by the manufacturing specifications for askinshoes.

I am allergic to potassium bichromate and nickel and want to know if these substances are eliminated from your footwear.

In addition to the characteristics of the leather mentioned above, other components that are in direct contact with the foot, such as toecaps, stiffeners, midsoles, threads, glues (which are strictly water-based) are first analysed and only then authorised for use in production. The tests performed on these components are aimed at verifying the presence or absence of heavy metals (chromium, nickel, lead and formaldehyde resin). Ornaments are nickel-free or plastic. Outsoles, whether in leather, rubber or other plastic materials, are not considered an element at risk, because they are not in direct contact with the foot.

Is your footwear waterproof?

We have chosen to favour shoes with “breathability” rather than those with a greater impermeability to water. This does not mean that your feet will get wet, but more attention should be paid. In any case the drying times of askinshoes is ten times faster than that of normal footwear on the market. In the area of footwear for city use, there are no “hydro-resistant” products on the market, while this remains an essential characteristic for “outdoor” footwear normally used in harsher environments, such as in the mountains and on rough tracks.

How long have you been producing anti-allergic footwear?

The first production of anti-allergic footwear took place at the end of the 1990s, in the context of the NAF (Non-Allergic-Footwear) research project, aimed at performing the first allergological tests on patients. Beginning in 2002 (after the research period was complete) the first real production began.
